Stained Glass Course – 2 Modules (bookable separately)
Stained glass has a magical appeal. The colors and shapes spark the imagination – and when light shines through, it creates an enchanting play of color and light. This centuries-old craft has remained essentially unchanged and continues to fascinate.

At the Openbare Werkplaats, we offer this course in two separate modules, each with its own focus and structure. You can register for each module individually. Each module builds on your skills, so you’ll gradually learn how to design and create stained glass windows independently.
Note: The course fee is per module.

Course Structure
After each module, you can either stop or continue with the next one. This setup allows you to gain a complete foundation in stained glass techniques in a short amount of time.
The course serves as a solid introduction for personal use, not as an official training to become a professional glazier. That said, several former participants have gone on to pursue stained glass professionally, or have deepened their craft with additional techniques such as glass painting.

Module 1 will be offered once this fall in English on Thursday evenings from 7-10 pm.
Module 2 is only offered in the spring

Course dates for spring will be published at the end of October.

Important: You can only register for Module 2 if you have completed Module 1.
Starting with your third project in Module 1, and throughout Module 2, you are welcome to design your own stained glass pieces. Before the class begins, you can send your design to the instructor via photo or sketch. She will review it and send it back with notes — such as adjusted cutting or leading lines, time indications, and necessary materials. This preparation allows you to start the hands-on work right away during class, saving valuable time.

Module 1 – Foundations: Working with Straight Lines & Intro to Curves
In this module, you’ll learn the fundamentals of working with stained glass. You will create three small panels:
• A practice panel,
• A panel with clean, straight lines,
• And a panel with your own design, including some half-rounded shapes.
This structure gives you a strong foundation to start creating simple designs independently. The module begins with an introduction to different types of glass and lead, tools, and safety measures.
You’ll learn how to:
• Cut, break, and grind glass (with water)
• Use the Morton board
• Transfer patterns onto glass
• Work with a pattern shears
• Efficiently work with various types of glass
• Calculate lead requirements
• Stretch lead and know when to do it
• Assemble a stained glass panel
• Solder, cement, and patinate your work
You’ll work with both traditional stained glass and Tiffany glass, allowing for creativity and flexibility.Module 2 – Deepening: Organic Shapes & Complex Connections
In this module, you’ll expand your skills and learn to work with flowing, organic forms and technical challenges. You will again create three small panels:
• A panel with large, curved shapes and open sections in the lead border,
• A round panel,
• And a panel with angled and three-point connections. You’ll explore freer designs within the structure and guidance provided by the instructor.
At this point, stained glass becomes a true puzzle:
How do you place the lead smartly? What order and direction do you choose? What types of cuts are most efficient?

You’ll learn:
• To work creatively with irregular shapes like circles, triangles, and ovals
• Advanced use of pattern shears and lead clippers
• Working with 4 mm lead for different lines and aesthetics
• How to solve small technical issues
• Advanced soldering, cementing, and finishing techniques
This module invites experimentation and helps you further develop your own style.

• Duration: 6 evenings over 6 weeks (6 × 3 hours) from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM OR 3 Sundays or 3 Wednesdays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (3 × 6 hours)

• No courses are held on official holidays
• Goal: To be able to work independently on your own stained glass window designs
• Target group: Anyone who wants to learn how to make stained glass panels themselves
• Skill level: Beginner – Intermediate – Advanced
• Instructor: Sacha Kaldenbach
• Group size: 5–7 participants
• Tools provided: Including grinder, soldering iron, and various hand tools
• Additional notes:
• Materials are included
• Day courses exclude lunch – please bring your own
• Course fee is per module
