The Japanese way of woodworking differs from what we are used to in the Western world. The philosophy behind the use of wood and the connections but also the use of tools. In this course you will get to know the culture. Various Japanese customs (bonsai and ikebana) and the associated tools such as the various pull saws, wooden block planes and beautifully designed chisels. The Japanese have been masters in making wood connections for centuries. In 1 day you will learn how to make 1 or 2 specific Japanese connections, a seemingly simple and a complex one. In one day you will get something of the beauty and precision of Japanese woodworking.
- Duration: 1 day (6 hours) from 10.00 to 16.00. On Friday or Saturday.
- Goal: Introduction into Japanese woodworking.
- Target group: People who want to learn the basic skills and about the philosophy around Japanese woodworking.
- Level: BASIC-advanced-expert.
- Content: Introduction to the Japanese woodworking tradition, the tools, joints and methods. Connections: the seemingly simple connections are the isuka tsugi or the sumi isuja tsugi. The more complex connections are the kanawa tsugi or shiho ari tsugi.
