This course is taught in both Dutch and English simultaneously. Both Dutch-speaking and English-speaking participants are welcome. You can book this course via the Dutch-language website: https://openbarewerkplaats.nl/shop/hout-meubels/houtdraaien/introductie-houtdraaien-avond/
It’s wonderful to see how quickly wood forms shapes under your hands on the lathe: think candlesticks, chair legs, chess pieces, wheels, pulleys, ornamental finials, spindles and wooden hammers for example. This course focuses on lathe cutting techniques, but it also looks at scraping techniques, tools, suitable woods, lathing profiles, finishing and, of course, safety. Once you get the taste and the hang of woodturning, you probably won’t be able to stop.
What to expect in this course?
Evening 1: Introduction, understanding the basics of wood lathes and chisels. This evening we’ll immediately make a foot massage roll (concave and convex turning) and concentrate on the convex shapes. Like an apple or an egg shape.
Evening 2: After a little refresher, this evening focuses on making a bowl. A nice, smooth, rounded exterior and an evenly hollowed-out interior! Quite a challenge. But you’ll quickly grasp the technique behind woodturning.
