Furniture Making

At the Openbare Werkplaats, we offer a variety of furniture making courses. You can learn how to work on wood with handtools or with the use of our stationary woodworking machines, both traditional or modern furniture.

Introduction into Furniture making (OWPKME)

You don’t need experience or big, complex machinery to make furniture. You start with a solid plank of beech and with a little bit of help from us with the table saw you can make yourself a stool to take home, using mainly hand tools and a variety of joints. The next time you want to make furniture, you can do it at home with the experience you gained. (Note: lunch is NOT included).

Traditional furniture making (OWPAME)

Do you want to work on solid wood with proper machines? In this course you start without any prior knowledge, learn to draw up plans for a little stool, then get to work on it and at the end of the course you will take your own finished piece home! In the process, you will get acquainted with the available large woodworking machines and other (electric) hand tools. You will be able to work independently in the workshop after this course.

  • Goal: independent machining of solid wood.

You start from scratch by making a working drawing and an action plan (showing measurements and order of work). Then you start work, guided by your own drawing, using the large woodworking machines and electric hand tools. You learn what shapes, cutting techniques, modern wood joints, interior design systems and finishes can be achieved in wooden sheet material (glued and/or pressed).
